Bahrain Membership in the United Nations
Bahrain has been a member of the United Nations since September 21, 1971. Currently we maintain permanent delegations to the United Nations headquarters in New York (est. 1971), and the United Nations office in Geneva (est. 1982).
Participated in the Security Council as a non-permanent member (1998-9), and played a prominent role in the defense of Islamic issues through submitting a joint proposal with Malaysia (res. 1239, 1999) with regard to the humanitarian situation in Kosovo, which was adopted.
Promotes human rights at the international level through our election into the Commission on Human Rights from 2002-2004, and the United Nations Human Rights Council in 2006.
Elected as Vice-Chairman of the Commission on Human Rights for its 2004 session.
Participated as member of the Economic and Social Council from 1990-1992, and 2000-2003, and was elected to the Vice Presidency of this council in 2002.

Presidency of the United Nations General Assembly
On June 8th 2006 Sheikha Haya Rashed Al Khalifa, founder of the Haya Rashed Al Khalifa Law Firm, was formally elected to the presidency of the UN General Assembly 61st session. The decision came with strong support from the Asian Group, which the Kingdom geographically belongs to, after a round of lobbying our key partner states throughout December 2005.
The significance of Sheikha Haya’s successful election was not just a cause to celebrate for our diplomatic corps but also a notable achievement for women regionally, who are a fundamental pillar of society. Women in the Kingdom of Bahrain are an integral part of our social makeup, assuming positions of significance in many professions. In this regard, Sheikha Haya Rashid Al Khalifa’s election is not an exception, but rather another evidence of the high esteem Bahraini society has placed upon women, and the high status they are able to achieve
