Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Meets IAEA Acting Director General
Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dr. Shaikha Rana bint Isa bin Daij Al Khalifa who also chairs the National Committee on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and their Destruction met Acting Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Cornel Feruta.
Today’s meeting was on the sidelines of Shaikha Rana’s participation in the 66th Session of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, Republic of Austria.
During the meeting, Dr. Shaikha Rana extended her sincere congratulations to Mr. Feruta on his nomination for the post of IAEA Acting Director General, wished him success in his new mission to achieve the Agency's noble goals and commended the IAEA's tireless efforts and initiatives to promote safe and peaceful use of nuclear technologies.
She affirmed in this regard that the Kingdom of Bahrain is keen to work jointly with the AEA to ensure that all countries direct atomic energy towards economic and social development and use it uniquely for peaceful purposes.
Dr. Shaikha Rana warned of the dangers facing the world today due to the inclination of some sides towards the use of nuclear energy for non-peaceful purposes, in violation of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
She stressed the need for all IAEA members to adopt a unified global strategy for the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction through an effective mechanism that would ensure global and regional disarmament, particularly in the Middle East.
Mr. Feruta expressed delight to the Foreign Ministry Undersecretary and Head of the National Committee, praising the existing constructive cooperation between the IAEA and the Kingdom of Bahrain in promoting nuclear energy use for peaceful purposes.
Meantime, he hailed the national Committee’s efforts and positive implementation of its joint programs with the IAEA for the good benefit of the region and the entire world, wishing the Kingdom of Bahrain constant affluence and progress.
